Over the Edge

For this project I had planned on painting a bridge for the theme over the edge. I drew out a couple sitting on a bridge with an emphasis on them.

Emphasis was going to be my topic using the people in bright colors. In the end, emphasis was still the theme but using rocks. After exploring the skill of palate knife painting, I discovered a talent in it. I love the way the knife made the rocks seem so realistic.

My media was acrylic. I love acrylic painting. It is something I have been working with for many years. I love painting sunsets so painting the water and sunset int he background was very natural for me. After seeing how good the painting turned out before the bridge was painting in, I decided to save that idea for project six and complete the painting with an extra layer of mountains faded in the background.

The theme would still fit and I could work with adding to the background easily. I used medium to dull out the mountains and make them appear to be in the distance behind the previously painted mountains. I really enjoyed this project and working with the acrylic medium.

 I can not wait to start project six and go with my plan of a couple on the bridge.

Pairs (Project 4)

For my fourth project I went with the theme of Pairs. I brainstormed objects that are always together. As always, the ideas got more creative as the list went down. I ended up with the idea of a knife and a fork.

Next it was time to plan. I went through many ideas and designs before I reached my final decision of using stings and nails on a board. 

The nailing process was the most time consuming of this project and the winding of yarn between nails was the most time consuming. I loved this project. On the drawn parts I used paint pens. They glide easily across the table cloth fabric. The simple elegance of the final piece was worth all the hard work.  I can see me using line art in the future in art. 

My topic was asymmetrical balance because of the way the two pieces (or pairs) need to go together to look like one piece. The weight evens it self out when the pieces are stacked.

The final piece medium was mixed media (yard, table cloth, nails, and paint pens).

Along for the Ride (Project 3)

For my third project I went along with the theme of Along for the Ride. I brainstormed some ideas for this and came up with a lot of objects involved in movement. Then I started thinking outside the box about moments in life that you go along with. I came up with the idea of relationships that later lead me to the idea of a wedding dress.

My chosen medium was paper sculpture. Weddings are very detailed and so is paper sculpting. On Pinterest I saw a wedding dress made out of paper and cotton balls. It was a very basic design that I found a lot of freedom to work with. Of course, I went through Pintrest and found references. :)

Through looking through the book The Art and Craft of Paper Sculpture, I learned ways to cut paper to work with shadows.  This project contained a lot of mess ups and restarts because I had no idea what I was doing.  I have cut paper many times but never in the fine detail needed for this project. I enjoyed this project but do not see me working with many paper sculptures in the future.  Not only is it too time consuming for this class, it is also very tedious and requires that you do not have many breaks from it.  There is no good stopping point when working on this project because messes are made and supplies takes a while to get out everyday.

The halfeway point and the final piece. The base of the dress is a basic flower turned upside down.  I learned how to make the simple flower on a YouTube video.  It doesn't get much simpler than that. :)

 The topic that is most easily seen in this piece is texture.  Since the dress is 3D and all the paper is layered, the dress looks extremely realistic and textured.

Up Close and Personal

My second project deals with the theme of up close and personal. When I think of this theme I think of touch and focus.  My planning and brainstorming shows these ideas in the image below.

A toy I used to love when I went to the Toy Chest when I was growing up was called PenPression.  I would stand in the toy isle and press into the pins, forming different shapes on the other side until it was time to check out. While looking on Pintrest I found a image of the Virgin Mary done with a topic of line.  I decided I would combine my love from PenPression and the eye catching Virgin Mary piece to make my own piece using the line topic.  My references shown below.

My final piece was done with water soluble colored pencils as the medium.  I first drew the piece using only colored pencil. The next class period I started adding water to areas to make the face impression stick out more.

I am very happy with the final piece because it broke me out of my comfort zone in acrylics and painting and opened my eyes to a new media.

Glassed Over

In my Art 4/AP Art class we were given a list of themes to choose from.  It is our job to branch out form these themes and create artwork that says something about us and speaks to the viewers in a certain way.  In order for me, the artist, to relay a message to a viewer I must choose from the list of topics we are given and the list of medias we can use to portray my feelings and thoughts.

The first project I created was under the theme Glassed Over.  I made a list and brainstormed everything that came to my mind when I thought of what glassed over could mean. My brainstorming and rough sketches are showed in the image below.

Next I found references that would help me sketch out my artwork.  I chose the topic of distortion to portray my idea of glassed over by taking the term both figuratively and literally.  I decided to create a winter scene with a iced over lake with a layer of cut glass over the final product. My references can be seen in the image below.

The final step before creating my final piece was to sketch out my idea.  I used my references and small sketches to draw out my final idea in my sketchbook. This is where the fun and creating begins!

Now its time to create the final piece.  After all the research and planning I have done I know pretty much what the final product will look like.  I chose the oil paint media to work with the create a glossy look in my painting.  I am very familiar with acrylic paints but oils were a whole new experience.  The oil paints were much thicker than acrylic paint and the patients you must have with oils can be the difference between a smeared, sloppy piece and a clean cut finished piece. At first I had my painting done in all earth tones.  The look was very dull and boring. I knew I had much more in me.  I began placing very bold colors onto my canvas and the painting began to come alive.  To keep the same idea of iced (or glassed) over I dry brushed some white over the colors.  Dry brushing allows some of the old bold colors to shine and show through the white layer.  The final step (the literal part) is when I cut a piece of replacement glass to be placed on top of my final piece.  This was the hardest step because I had never worked with anything similar to cutting glass.  I got better at it the more I practiced but I don't think I will be using much glass in my future projects. It is a time consumer and in this fast paced class I do not have much time to waste. I am very happy with my final product (shown below) and have learned a whole new media to work with in this creating process.

Allie's Talking Tiger (#3)

Talking Tiger

For my final exam in Computer Art and Animation, I had to take a tiger that was painted by a elementary school student and animate him to make him talk.  We started by going into Photoshop to making 8 faces that the mouth makes when talking.  Then we imported all the faces into Flash and went to work.  Its safe to say that I would not mind not hearing The Tigger Song  for a few days after hearing it broken into syllables and played in slow motion. I enjoyed this project and would love to do something similar in a song that is more my age and with my artwork.  Maybe this will be my new thing.  Taking my portraits and making them talk... we will see.
